Ecology @ UVic Discussion Group 2017-2018
Tuesdays 3:30 - 4:30pm DTB B255
Come join us!
Every week, the Ecology@UVic group meets to discuss current ecological research occurring both in the literature and on campus.
Anyone is welcome: faculty, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students, or anyone else interested in ecology We encourage students to present proposals, preliminary data, or practice a conference presentation, as well as occasionally facilitating skills workshops and paper discussions. Amazing things happen when a room full of ecologists put their heads together for an hour. Don't believe us? Come see for yourself! Get feedback, bounce ideas around, and build community and collaborations.
Every week a new person leads the discussion or presents their work. As said, we encourage people to do any of the following:
Alternatively, if you think of a skill or paper you have always wanted to know more about, find a pro and ask them if they will lead a session. We welcome suggestions for presenters and are happy to facilitate, with one caveat: we have no money. Sorry!
If you want to present or lead a session, let us know. Or, snag a spot now by signing up on our Google Docs spreadsheet.

Every week a new person leads the discussion or presents their work. As said, we encourage people to do any of the following:
- Present a proposal. New grad student? Not really sure what your project is, but have a dataset, a few ideas, or major interests you want to pursue? Come give a quick presentation and sponge up some ideas.
- Present preliminary data. Just get back from field work and have a lot of data that you don't know how to analyze? Or do you have 25 different analysis tools and are not sure of the best or coolest way? Our group is awesome at suggesting interesting angles to data analysis and the newest techniques available.
- Present a past project. If you are really proud of a past project (academic, government, NGO or privately-affiliated), tell us about it. Maybe it will benefit someone who is just starting a project, or maybe you need a final push to publish that manuscript. We can help!
- Practice for a presentation or conference and receive feedback on content, presentation style, etc.
- Lead a paper discussion. Have you found an amazing, foundational paper for your project, but have some issues with the methods? Or the conclusions drawn? Bring it to the group and we will drill down and deconstruct the paper, hopefully giving some insight into the broad literature. We try to make all papers discussed available in our resource library.
- Teach a skills workshop. If you are a wizard at making maps in R, or a guru at science communication, we want to learn from you. Sign up and teach us some new skills.

See you Tuesdays at 3:30!
